About Me

My name is Kev and welcome to my Scooter Do website.

The Scooter Do was started on November 6th 2004, held upstairs at The Billesley pub in Birmingham. It is a night dedicated to the best Northern Soul and Mod music. The Do is held approximately every two months and has gone from strength to strength with numbers reaching 180+. The aim of the Scooter Do is to bring a Scooter Rally- type event to people in a room that resembles a 1970's dance hall on a more regular basis and, of course, for people to dance the night away to the well known tunes with a few new ones thrown in.

The music is provided by Tony Reynolds of the Outrigger days and DJ Dave which, without either, wouldn't be the same. Also, a big shout to all the people who have helped on the door, Tall Neil, Alison and Yvy, to name but a few.

I first became interested in scooters at the age of 13 when like most people on the scene I saw Quadrophenia. After seeing the film I was hooked and wanted a scooter. I loved The Kinks and The Who and proudly displayed their names on my Parka as I walk around school. I got my first scooter when I was around 14, a knackered Vespa Rally 200 from Motto Continental bought for me by my parents to do up and learn about engines. When I was 15 I bought a Mint Vespa 90 for around £60 with a view to putting a 50cc engine in and getting it ready for my 16th birthday. In the meantime I was not having much luck with my Rally 200 so swapped it for another Vespa 90 which to this day I still regret, but hey I was young!

I remember my 16th birthday as if it was yesterday. I waited til one minute past midnight and with provisional licence in pocket I was off riding my Vespa 50 legally for the first time, now I was a proper Mod!

It was at this point an interest in all types of scooterist music came into play as I could now venture out further from my local confines. Birmingham city centre was now in reach and a place called The Outrigger which I had heard about so many times became a place to go every Friday and Saturday. With a young Tony Reynolds behind the decks a great selection of Punk, Ska, Mod and of course, Northern Soul was being played, but it was the Northern Soul that really caught my ear. It seemed so fresh and you just could not help but dance to it.

Now, many rally years down the line and with so many great nights at The Outrigger and West End bar behind me (they are sadly gone, never to happen again), I thought it was time to try to bring some of those good times back as best I could. It will never be the same but it's damn close! Kev
